The distinction

Is it the well, or the equipment in it?

Most people call about a well when what has actually failed is a pump, a switch or a tank. That’s worth knowing, because the two lead to very different jobs. Equipment problems are usually repairable in a visit. Problems with the well itself are a bigger conversation.

The most useful clue is whether the problem tracks with how much water you use. A pressure switch doesn’t care how much water the household draws, and it fails the same way every time. A well that’s struggling behaves differently: fine first thing, weaker through the day, better again by morning.

Classic drawdown pattern. The well is recovering overnight and not keeping up with daily demand.

Water has turned cloudy, gritty or sandy

Something has changed in the borehole, or the pump is drawing from lower than it used to.

Yield has dropped off gradually over months or years

Wells lose capacity as the screen and surrounding formation foul up. Often recoverable.

The water smells or tastes different than it did

Worth investigating rather than filtering. A change usually has a cause.

Air spits from the taps

Commonly a leak in the drop pipe or a failed check valve. Equipment, not the well.

The wellhead or casing looks damaged

A compromised cap or casing is a contamination route into your water supply. Don’t leave it.

What water well repair covers

Repair work on the well itself falls into a few broad categories, and which one applies is usually settled by an inspection rather than a guess.

Restoring lost yield

Wells silt up and the formation around the screen becomes fouled over time. Cleaning and reworking a well can recover capacity that has been lost gradually, and it’s almost always cheaper than drilling a replacement.

Casing and wellhead repairs

The casing keeps the borehole open and keeps surface water out. A damaged cap, a corroded pitless adapter or compromised casing is both a performance problem and a contamination risk.

Sediment and grit

Grit in the water wears out pumps fast. Fixing it means finding out why the well started producing sediment, not just filtering it downstream.

Setting depth and pump position

If the water level has changed, a pump set at the wrong depth will either draw air or sit in sediment. Repositioning is sometimes all that’s needed.

The range on well repair is wider than on equipment work, because the diagnosis comes first.

Whether the well or the equipment failed

By far the biggest fork in the road. Equipment work is bounded and predictable. Work on the borehole itself is not, until someone has looked.

Depth and construction

How deep the well is, how it was cased, and how well it was built. Older wells with unknown construction carry more uncertainty.

What has to come out of the hole

If the pump and drop pipe must be pulled to reach the problem, that labour lands on the bill regardless of what’s found.

Whether rehabilitation is viable

Restoring an existing well is usually far cheaper than drilling a new one, but not every well is a candidate, and it takes an inspection to know.

Questions people ask about well repair

The quickest way to tell them apart is whether the problem tracks with usage. Equipment faults tend to be consistent and often electrical, appearing the same way every time. Well problems tend to track with demand and recovery, so pressure holds up in the morning and falls away after heavy use. A provider confirms this by measuring the standing water level and watching how fast it draws down.

Sediment usually means the pump is drawing from lower in the well than it used to, or that something has changed in the borehole. It is worth attention rather than a filter, because grit moving through a pump wears it out quickly and the underlying cause does not fix itself.

Often, yes. Wells lose yield over time as the screen or the formation around it becomes fouled, and cleaning or reworking the well can restore some of that. Whether it is worth doing depends on the construction and condition of the well, which is what an inspection is for.
