Symptoms

Signs your well pump is in trouble

A failing pump rarely stops dead without warning. It usually spends weeks or months doing something slightly wrong first. Knowing which of these you’re seeing narrows the problem considerably before anyone comes out.

The pump starts and stops every few seconds

Called short-cycling. Hard on the motor, and usually caused by the pressure tank rather than the pump.

The pump runs constantly and never shuts off

Often a leak, a dropped water level, or a pump no longer able to reach cut-off pressure.

Air spits from the taps before the water

Air is getting into the system somewhere, commonly through the drop pipe or a failed check valve.

Pressure is fine in the morning and weak by evening

Points to the well recovering overnight and drawing down faster than it refills during the day.

The breaker trips when the pump starts

An electrical fault, a seized motor, or undersized wiring. Stop resetting it and get it looked at.

The water has turned cloudy or gritty

Sediment usually means the pump is drawing from too low in the well, or the well needs attention.

What actually fails

“Pump problem” covers a system with several separate parts, and the pump is often not the one that broke. A provider works through them roughly in this order, because the cheap and accessible parts fail more often than the expensive buried one.

Types of pump

Submersible, jet and shallow-well pumps

Which one you have changes what a repair involves, and how much of the job is spent getting to the pump in the first place.

MOST COMMON

Submersible

Sits near the bottom of the well and pushes water up. Nothing visible above ground except the wellhead. Reaching it means pulling the pump and drop pipe out of the borehole, which is most of the labour on any submersible job.

ABOVE GROUND

Jet pump

Mounted above ground, usually in a well house or garage, and draws water up by suction. Easier and cheaper to reach, which changes the repair-versus-replace maths considerably.

SHALLOW WELLS

Shallow-well and convertible

Used where the water sits close to the surface. Suction has physical limits, so these are only suitable up to a certain depth, which is why they are less common on deeper West Texas wells.

What moves the price of a pump repair

Nobody can quote this honestly without seeing the well. These are the factors that decide where a job lands.

Which part failed

A pressure switch is a small above-ground part. A submersible pump and motor is not. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive realistic outcome on the same symptom is large.

Whether the pump has to come out

The single biggest factor on a submersible system. Once the pump is out of the hole, the labour is already spent, which is why replacement often gets discussed at that point even if a repair is technically possible.

How deep the pump is set

More depth means more drop pipe, more wire, and more time on the pull. Depth varies a lot between properties here, even between neighbours.

Site access

Whether a truck and rig can get to the wellhead, and what is in the way. Acreage properties vary enormously on this.

Condition of everything else

Old wiring, a corroded pitless adapter or a tired pressure tank often surface during the job. A good provider tells you what they found and what it means before doing extra work.

Common questions

Questions people ask about pump repair

Rapid on-off cycling is usually the pressure tank rather than the pump itself. When a tank loses its air charge it can no longer hold a reserve of pressurised water, so the pump starts every time a tap opens. The pump is the part that wears out from it, but replacing the pump without fixing the tank means the new one wears out the same way.

It usually means the pump is running but not moving water, which points to a few possibilities: the water level has dropped below the pump intake, the drop pipe or a check valve has failed, or the pump itself has lost its impellers. A provider will check the water level and the electrical draw first, because those two readings separate most of these causes quickly.

Plenty of pump problems are not the pump. Pressure switches, control boxes, capacitors, check valves and wiring all fail and are all repairable in place. When the pump itself has failed, the economics shift, because most of the cost of the job is pulling it out of the well rather than the part itself.

If you can see a pump above ground near the wellhead or in a well house, it is a jet pump. If there is no visible pump and just a capped wellhead with wiring running into it, the pump is submersible and sitting near the bottom of the well. Submersible pumps are far more common on deeper wells.
