The decision

Repair or replace?

This decision is usually settled by labour, not by the price of the part. On a submersible system, most of the cost of any job is pulling the pump and drop pipe out of the borehole. Once that work is already done and the pump is lying on the ground, the question changes.

Putting a tired pump back down the hole means paying that same labour again when it fails. Fitting a new one while everything is already out costs the difference in parts and nothing more in access. That’s why providers often raise replacement at the point the pump comes out, even when a repair is technically possible.

The reverse is also true. If the pump is relatively new and the fault is a pressure switch, a control box or a check valve, replacing the pump would be throwing away a good part. Those cases belong on well pump repair.

When replacement is usually the answer

The pump was the wrong size for the well

More bathrooms, irrigation, or livestock. A pump specified for the old load will struggle with the new one.

Parts are no longer available

Older units reach a point where sourcing components costs more than a new pump.

Check the tank too

A failed pressure tank is one of the most common reasons pumps wear out early. Fitting a new pump to a tired tank often means the new pump lives the same short life.

Choosing the replacement pump

Matching whatever was in there before is not automatically the right answer. Four things decide the correct pump.

Setting depth

How far down the pump sits determines how much lift it has to overcome. Get this wrong and the pump either can’t deliver pressure or runs harder than it should.

Well yield

How fast the well produces water. A pump that moves more than the well can supply will draw the level down and run dry, which destroys pumps quickly.

Household demand

Fixtures, irrigation, livestock, and how many draws happen at once. This sets the flow and pressure the system actually has to deliver.

Electrical supply

Voltage available at the wellhead and the condition of the wiring. On long runs out to a remote wellhead this genuinely constrains the choice.

What moves the price of a pump replacement

Setting depth

The dominant factor. Depth drives the pump specification, the amount of drop pipe and wire, and the time spent on the pull and the reset.

Pump type and specification

Submersible versus jet, horsepower, and whether a constant-pressure system is being fitted rather than a conventional one.

What else gets replaced while it’s open

Drop pipe, wire, check valves, pitless adapter, pressure tank. Doing these while the well is already open is cheaper than doing them later as separate visits.

Electrical work

If the existing supply or wiring isn’t adequate for the new pump, that becomes part of the job.

Site access

Whether a rig can reach the wellhead, and what has to be worked around to get there.

Questions people ask about pump replacement

The deciding factor is usually labour rather than parts. Most of the cost of working on a submersible pump is pulling it out of the well, so once it is already out, replacing a pump that is near the end of its life often costs less over time than putting the old one back. If the pump is relatively new and the fault is an above-ground part, repair is the obvious call.

Not necessarily, and matching the old one is not always right. The correct pump depends on the depth it will be set at, the yield of the well, the pressure the household needs and the electrical supply available. If the previous pump was undersized or oversized, repeating that choice repeats the problem.
